“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” –Jesus (Matthew 16:19 NIV)
Have you ever wondered what excites God? Does anything delight Him to the point that He leaps up from throne and shouts, “Yes!!!” And if so, what is it? Let’s take it a bit further; is there anything that God looks for in us that so thrills Him that He begins to open doors for us? In other words, what stirs God into action on our behalf? What is it that qualifies us to receive the keys of the kingdom?
God is on a continual quest. He’s searching for one distinguishing trait in His people. It can be summed up in one word—faithfulness.
Jesus said, “I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.” (Revelation 3:8 NIV) Faithfulness is the key that opens this “door that no one can shut.” No enemy, spiritual or physical, can shut a door that the Sovereign Lord has opened.
To paraphrase the words of Jesus, “I’ve been watching you, child. I know your deeds. I’ve seen you remain faithful to keep my Word. And even though you’ve felt weak at times, you still stood tall and refused to deny me.” You see, my friend, God opens doors only for those who have stood steadfast in the midst of testing. He opens doors only for those who have consistently done their best to cling to God’s Word. Doors swing wide for those who have refused to deny His name or the promises of His Word. In other words, your persistent faithfulness is showing God that He can trust you.
“I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven.” — Paul (Acts 26:19 NIV)
I believe this is one of the most important revelations about the Christian walk I’ve ever received. The key to the doors that God wants to open for us is faithfulness. He’s not looking for perfection. He’s looking for persistence. If we unswervingly stay faithful to the basics of the Christian walk, studying the Word, prayer, fellowship with other believers and sharing Christ with the lost, and remain faithful to the vision God has placed in our hearts, He will continue to open doors. I can’t emphasize this enough; it’s not just the doing of these things that matters, it is the consistency in the doing, the steadfastness. This is what catches God’s eye.
The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry.(Psalm 34:15 NIV)
I believe that unyielding faithfulness is what Jesus is referring to in John 15, when He encourages us to “remain” in Him. Verse 5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” In the original Greek that verse is literally saying, “If a man maintains a living communion with me…he will bear much fruit.” It is one’s willingness to maintain his relationship with God that opens doors to continued fruitfulness.
So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. (Hebrews 10:35-36 NIV)
The word “persevere” comes from a Greek word that literally means, “an abiding under.” It speaks of constancy, a hopeful endurance, a patient continuance or waiting.1 Remaining in Jesus causes your faithfulness to show. It grants access into God’s very best for us. Faithfulness is what catches God’s eye. That’s what opens doors that no man can shut.
